Using data-driven KPIs to improve business performance
5 min readTitan Industrial Partners

Most established businesses have more data than they use. The opportunity is not to collect more, but to agree the few measures that genuinely drive results and to review them with discipline. Good KPIs turn opinions into evidence and make problems visible while they are still small.
The measures we look at first
- Gross margin by customer and product — where profit is really made.
- Cash conversion and debtor days — how quickly profit becomes cash.
- On-time, in-full delivery — the customer’s view of reliability.
- Utilisation and productivity — how well people and assets are used.
- Quality and rework — the hidden cost of getting it wrong.
- Staff turnover and absence — an early warning on culture.
From reporting to decisions
Numbers only matter if they change what people do. We favour a short monthly pack, agreed thresholds that trigger action and a simple owner for every measure. The conversation moves from “what happened?” to “what are we doing about it?”
Keep it simple
Sophisticated dashboards are no substitute for clarity. In smaller businesses a well-designed spreadsheet and a disciplined monthly meeting often deliver more than an expensive system. Technology helps once the habits are in place.
For owners preparing for a sale, good KPIs have a second benefit: they give buyers confidence, and confidence supports value.
